Medewerker in witte jas overziet de frietproductie op de transportbanden in een Aviko-fabriek

Aviko 3D Academy · Food & Beverage

You learn safety
by doing it.

An interactive 3D safety training in which employees experience for themselves what safe work means. They step digitally into their own work environment, recognise risks and make the same choices they face in practice.

The challenge

Safe work is all about choices.

In a production environment like Aviko’s, safety is everywhere. Machines, forklifts, hazardous substances and work at height all call for clear procedures.

But safety lives above all in the choices people make every day. Stepping over something just this once. Helping out with a task you were not trained for. Or driving on while you are really too tired. Those are exactly the moments we wanted to train.

So the challenge was not

“How do we give everyone the same training?”

But

“How do you train one safety culture without giving everyone the same training?”

From instruction to experience

From instruction to experience.

The answer became the Aviko 3D Academy: an interactive environment that runs entirely in the browser. No installation, app or VR headset required. Employees start on a 3D map and step from there into different training scenarios, built from 360° imagery of real Aviko locations.

Not a generic factory, but an environment that stays close to daily practice.

Recognisable locations

Look. Assess. Act. And discover what the safe choice is.

Two routes

Two routes, one safety culture.

At the start, every employee chooses the route that fits their work environment: office or factory. Both routes cover the same safety themes, but from a different practice.

After all, a last-minute risk analysis for a business trip calls for different considerations than one on the factory floor.

Every employee:

  • chooses the route that fits their own work
  • completes ten tailored scenarios
  • experiences the same themes from their own practice
  • can also explore the other route afterwards

More than multiple choice

Almost every scenario has its own format.

Asking the same question seventeen times does not work. Instructional videos appear at exactly the moment and place where they are relevant. And a wrong choice does not mean a red cross: the employee is told why it was not the safest choice, and tries again.

01

Spot unsafe situations

Employees scan an environment themselves and flag whatever is not in order.

02

Sort PPE

Selecting the right personal protective equipment for the task at hand.

03

Make a machine safe

Making a machine safe step by step following the LOTOTO procedure.

04

Report & communicate

Filling in incident reports and work permits, calling a supervisor or holding a safety dialogue.

Learning from the results

A training that keeps improving itself.

The Academy records not only whether someone completes the training, but also the choices along the way. For each scenario it captures which answers were given and where things went right or wrong. When many employees make the same wrong choice in the same situation, that yields valuable information.

That makes the Academy more than a training tool:

Four languages

Four languages. One experience.

The full training is available in Dutch, English, German and French. Not only the interface and scenarios are translated; the instructional videos are also shown automatically in the right language. New languages can be added later, without rebuilding the Academy.

The Academy in numbers

17 Scenarios across ten safety themes
10 Scenarios per employee, tailored
52 Videos embedded in the scenarios
127 360° captures and scenario imagery

Technology in the background

The 3D environment is not the goal of the Academy. It is the means to let employees recognise a situation, make a choice themselves and immediately experience what that choice means. That is why it is not about nicer graphics or more complex technology, but about recognisable locations, varied formats and direct feedback.

Not watching a training about safety, but acting for yourself in a safe simulation of real practice.
